AWD Speaks! – Panel 3

If you’re a new teaching professor, postdoc fellow, and graduate students, come learn about the various branches of AWD! If you’ve been a member of the WP for a while, come support your colleagues and learn about their approaches! These presentations will lead our new (and old!) team members through the arc of the course with a spotlight on a particular assignment from start to finish.

  • Business (3304) by Laura Beerits
In her presentation, Laura will share how she went from panicking about having to teach business writing (and wondering what “business writing” actually is) to really enjoying teaching ENGW 3304. She’ll give an overview of her course and describe how two aims guide each assignment: 1) giving students room to explore their own business interests and 2) asking them to write for a real audience. Then, she’ll walk participants through the first course assignment—a workplace writing genre analysis—and the activities that build to it.
  • Interdisciplinary (3315) by Jon Benda
Jon’s presentation will focus on his first assignment. In Project One, I ask students to analyze a scholarly article in their discipline using the “rules for academic discourse” described by Ann Johns (1997). This project opens up a variety of issues concerning “norms” of academic writing, variations from those norms, and author agency vs. disciplinary expectations for scholarly publishing.
